The Cobra name referred to the new 428 Cobra Jet V-8 that was fitted under the KR's snake like custom fiberglass hood. Many modifications were made to the stock GT Mustang. The GT500 KR or "King of the Road" powered by a pavement eating Cobra Jet 428 engine was deviously rated at only 335 horsepower when in fact, it pumped out at least 400 horsepower.
